- Personae

“Second Body”

The second body is a constructed image of the body entangled with a notion of architectural representation. An architectural personae that is provoked through a human form.

Design Studio Twenty-Five takes the fundamental relationship between the body and architecture and interprets this through the notion of the second body. An experience embodied. The result is an unabashed speculation on a personae or representation of an architecture.

- Prologue

With the emergence of a digital era of design, the representation of the body is merely applied as ‘people texture’ in renders. Contrary to these ubiquitous figures the second body aims to intertwine the body in the architectural design process and view an architecture with not only the sense of the body but of the particular subject’s position.

Humanist emblems of the renaissance hold great precedents to the theory of the second body. They were used broadly as design devices. From the likes of Frencesco Di Giorgio Martini’s Ideal Church Plan, which instilled a particularly ontological underpinning through the plan, to the so commonly seen Putti, which were embedded within architecture, supporting the artist in a buildings ornamentation.
