BUILDING ON ADOLESCENCE - THE SKATE ACADEMY

DS25 takes the fundamental relationship between the body and architecture and interprets this through the notion of the second body, an embodiment of an architecture. This project builds Madelon Vriesendorp's Flagrant Délit, a painting which pushes at the perception of a building as a body. This project questions whether architecture bares the biological traits of a body. Whether a certain appearance or trait can be construed as dominant or recessive gene in a buildings body. The narrative devises an architectural ancestry of the two most prominent and parenting buildings in London, the Shard and One Canada Square.

The narrative speaks the parents parenting a baby building, hoping it would flourish within the greener, low density context of East London. As it grows it develops its a new archetype and settles down above London’s first listed skatepark. This project suggests what will happen once sites like this become difficult for the skyscraper culture that is brewing in East London. How will the building respond to the new context with its dominant skyscraper genetics. Will it rebel against its parents logic and stand as it own architecture.
